The Virgin, Inviolate Mountain

Anonymous
Created in Novgorod
Beginning of the 16th century
Tempera on wood
H. 34,5 cm ; w. 28,6 cm

Against a characteristic light ground, the Virgin holds the Son, who is making the sign of blessing.

On her ochre-red maphorion is a veritable rebus comprising the rainbow that Noah saw in the sky after the flood, the ladder seen by Jacob in his dream, and the head of King of Kings which, according to the prophet Ezekiel, passed through the closed door of the Temple.

For Christians, these Old Testament themes are reminders of the fulfilment of the promises of salvation made by the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, in the persons of Jesus and his Mother.
